A Tribute To Andy Irons (1978 – 2010)

Former three-time world surfing champion Andy Irons passed away earlier today at the age of 32. An autopsy is to be performed but it is thought the cause of death was dengue fever, a viral disease he contracted in Bali, Indonesia. His wife is currently 7 months pregnant with his son, it’s a very sad time for surfing to have lost one of the greatest surfers of our time at such a young age.

Some say his rivalry with Kelly Slater was the greatest rivalry that surfing has ever known, and the only meaningful rival that Kelly had at his peak. Andy Irons still holds the record as the only surfer to win at every location on the world title circuit. He is so renowned in Hawaii (he was born on Kuaui) that February 13th is ‘Andy Iron’s Day’ in Hawaii. His last competition was the Billabong Pro Tahiti in September, which he won.

Let’s remember Andy Irons doing what he loved, I’m sure that’s what he would have wanted.
